Identity Theft Is Serious Business

The FBI says that Identity Theft if the fastest growing crime in the United States.

NY indicts 17 on trafficking, ID thefts
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, November 7, 2007 4:49 p.m. PT

NEW YORK -- A grand jury has indicted 17 people and a corporation on charges of identity theft, worldwide trafficking in stolen credit card numbers and other crimes committed using the Internet, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The 173-count indictment, resulting from the second phase of a two-year investigation, says the defendants trafficked in more than 95,000 stolen credit card numbers and caused more than $4 million in credit card fraud.

Identity Theft occurs  when someone, without your permission, uses your personal identification information, such as your name, credit card number or Social Security number, in order to commit a crime or fraud

These crimes can be committed in many different ways. Identity thieves may purchase items with your credit card number, rent an apartment using your personal information,  obtain a credit card or set up an account in your name. 

You may not even be aware of the crime until you are contacted by a debt collector or see one of your credit card statements that contains charges that you did not make. 


 

The Victims of Identity Theft

The FTC estimates that about 9 million Americans have their identities stolen every year.

It is possible for some identity theft victims to resolve their problems in a short period of time, such as in a few weeks, but many others have to spend months or years and hundreds or even thousands of dollars trying to repaired the damage that has been done to their name and credit record. 

Once you  become a victim of Identity Theft, it can not only harm your present situation, it can also have a negative impact on future happenings, like applying for a loan, trying to rent an apartment or even harm your chances when applying for a job. 
You may even be arrested for crimes that you did not commit.
